Predatory towing practices are harming consumers throughout Michigan. While the majority of tow truck operators in Michigan are reputable service providers, some unscrupulous towers and storage facility owners are engaged in predatory practices victimizing consumers and significantly increasing car insurance rates for all Michiganders.

Newly proposed legislation aims to protect consumers from Predatory Towing Practices by amending existing law to include some of the strongest protections in the country against such practices in the following ways:

• Create new licensing and registration requirements for tow providers
• Include some of the strongest consumer protections in the country to guard against predatory towing practices
• Provide a reasonable fee schedule to ensure reputable towers are paid a fair amount, while protecting consumers from predatory price gouging
• Create penalties for violation of the law and additional remedies for consumers harmed by these unfair and deceptive practices
